Asleep on a Sunbeam

Ashley Escobar

Asleep on a sunbeam

The torment of rhubarb

Brings cherubs into mind

High tea at noon

Dozing in and out of sleep

Unmarked garden–

Clementines litter your floor

An offering–

of cream, delights of

Rose and turpentine

Cherry wood

Haunts from a past life

External lightness

stop & smell the rose chai

Maybe the day is still brewing, or it is

as a gentle steep, or maybe it is

a cup of tea that you forgot

you made until the leaves sat in the near-

boiling water long enough to be bitter.

There is still sweetness to be found – add

sugar, if you like, or honey. Take it

however you want

to take your day; sometimes,

it’s too much to try

and seize it. Some days, simply

sip it. Cut it

with milk, watch it curl and cloud

as you stir. Take your time.
